WATERMAN CONTINUES TO RE-WRITE FRANCHISE RECORD BOOKS SCORING 500TH POINT

Kyle Warrener • June 20, 2024

Zane Waterman continued his strong campaign and his journey to re-write the Honey Badgers record books Wednesday night in an 85-79 victory home against the Montreal Alliance.

Courtesy of two three-pointers in the opening frame, Waterman reached the 500-point mark of his CEBL career in his franchise-leading 46th game for the club. He finished the game just as strong, scoring nine of Brampton’s 12 points coming down the stretch in Target Score Time to secure the win.

Waterman is the third player in Honey Badgers franchise history to accomplish this feat, joining former teammates Christian Vital (616) and Koby McEwen (522). All three players were key members of the 2022 championship squad and played together during the 2023 season in Brampton. McEwen is now playing with the Vancouver Bandits, while Vital continues his overseas career in China with Henan Shedianlaojiu.

“It feels good, but more importantly it feels better to get the win,” said Waterman following his 28-point performance. “It’s fun to follow these stats and make an impact on the floor.”

He becomes the 33rd player in the CEBL’s six-year history to reach this milestone, joining a list of players including two-time CEBL Most Valuable Player Xavier Moon among other league veterans and rising stars.

“Zane is the perfect professional. He is a team player and an excellent leader and it shows on and off the court,” said Sheldon Cassimy, head coach and assistant general manager of the Brampton Honey Badgers. “His leadership has helped keep our team together through the losing streak, and we are excited to build on this.”

This is not the first time Waterman has continued to put himself in the Honey Badgers record books this season. Last week, while the Honey Badgers were in Saskatoon to start their short two-game western road trip, the Manhattan College product became the franchise's all-time leader in games played. Waterman recorded 21 points while adding six rebounds in his 44th game in the black and gold pinstripes, passing Cody John, coincidently currently playing with the Rattlers.

Earlier this season, Waterman opened the season scoring at a record-setting pace, becoming the first player in franchise history to score 25+ points in consecutive games with a 28-point performance in a victory over the Ottawa BlackJacks on May 26.

Waterman is also the franchise's all-time leader in total rebounds (244), averaging 5.3 through his three seasons with the club.

The Winston-Salem, North Carolina native entered the season with professional experience in nine different countries totaling 203 games, averaging 14.0 points, 6.9 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 27.1 minutes.

Waterman and the Honey Badgers continue their efforts to turn around the season when they visit the Scarborough Shooting Stars on Friday night at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre. The team returns to the CAA Centre on Sunday, June 30 to host the Shooting Stars in the inaugural Salute To Service game presented by Kotak Personal Injury Law.
