HONEY BADGERS TO BECOME FIRST FRANCHISE IN CEBL HISTORY TO REACH CENTURY MARK IN GAMES PLAYED

Kyle Warrener • June 28, 2024

The Brampton Honey Badgers are set to be the first franchise in the Canadian Elite Basketball League to play 100 games in the league’s six-year history as they visit the Montreal Alliance tonight at Verdun Auditorium.

In the club’s history, the Honey Badgers hold a 51-48 (.515) overall record with a CEBL Championship in 2022, including two CEBL Championship Final appearances and five consecutive playoff berths.

“This franchise has accomplished a lot over the last six years on the court and out in the community,” said Josie Pingitore, vice president. “We’re excited to continue to build off this for years to come here in Brampton.”

Seventy-four different players have suited up in the black and gold pinstripes since the league’s inaugural season in 2019, including 11 who have played in the NBA G League following their time with the Honey Badgers. Lindell Wigginton, 2021 CEBL Canadian Player of the Year, signed a two-way contract with the Milwaukee Bucks in January 2022 to become the first player in CEBL history to do so.

Honey Badgers players have also played for their countries in various FIBA events with 11 athletes representing three different countries including Canada, Nigeria, and Great Britain.

The Honey Badgers have welcomed four head coaches in their history, including Chantal Vallee (2019), the first woman in the history of men’s professional basketball in the world to hold head coaching and general managing roles simultaneously. Antoine Broxsie (2023) and Ryan Schmidt, 2021 CEBL Coach of the Year, are both now involved in NBA organizations including the Cleveland Cavaliers and Atlanta Hawks, respectively. Sheldon Cassimy now serves as the team’s head coach in his fifth season with the organization.

In late November 2023, the Brampton Honey Badgers permanently relocated to Brampton’s CAA Centre from Hamilton.

The Honey Badgers return to the CAA Centre on Sunday for the
Salute To Service Game presented by Kotak Personal Injury Law. Group tickets, ultimate voucher packages, and single-game tickets are available now to witness the best of Canadian professional basketball this summer.
