The Brampton Honey Badgers of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Wednesday that they have signed 10-year veteran guard Jabs Newby ahead of the club’s West Coast trip.
The Brampton native has played for 14 different clubs over the course of a 243-game professional journey in Mexico, Spain, Colombia, and Canada. During his career, Newby has averaged 6.0 points, 2.4 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 19.2 minutes.
“Jabs (Newby) has played professionally for a number of years in various leagues, we’re confident that he will help guide our young players and help us get back on track”, said Jermaine Anderson, general manager and vice president of basketball operations.
Newby most recently appeared in four games with Corsarios in Colombia, where he averaged 9.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 21.8 minutes.
“I’m extremely grateful for this opportunity to play in my hometown this summer,” said Newby. “Not many people get to play so close to friends and family so I’m definitely going to take it all in and do the best I can to help the team win.”
This will be Newby’s third stint in the CEBL, following a combined 12 games played with the Fraser Valley Bandits (now Vancouver Bandits) in 2020 and 2022.
Newby appeared in 95 games over his four-year collegiate career at Eastern Kentucky University and Gannon University, averaging 2.9 points, 1.8 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 15.1 minutes. During his junior season, he led Gannon in assists (90) and finished second on the team in steals (30).
Newby will make his Honey Badgers debut tonight in Saskatoon when the team opens a short two-game western road trip against the Rattlers and Calgary Surge. Brampton returns home June 19 to host the Montreal Alliance at the CAA Centre. Group tickets, ultimate voucher packages, and single game tickets are available now to witness the best of Canadian professional basketball this summer.
